Sunbonnet Sue ... on the Auction Block

These scans are from Sunbonnet Sue quilts and blocks that have been for sale on e-bay.  I find it fascinating that whenever I visit the auction site, I can find several Sunbonnet Sue quilts for sale.  It is wealth of patterns.  Here are some of my favorites.

I drew patterns as best I could go go with the blocks.

Southern Bell Sue

These blocks show an older Sue in an old-fashioned costume.  These blocks are part appliqué, part embroidery.

To piece this, I would appliqué her bottom petticoat first, then the next, then the larger skirt.   The bodice would come next followed by the collar.  The hat and umbrella would come last.

The umbrella handle could be appliquéd or embroidered.  If you appliqué the umbrella handle, do it before the collar.

Hurry-Up Sue

This block is unusual because it is cut from one piece of fabric.  Hence the name, it can be appliquéd down in one piece.  The embroidery is necessary to accentuate the individual parts.

Sue in the Garden

This sue block is nice.  The dress is more curved than some I've seen and I like the fact that her hand is hidden in her pocket.

Sue Playing with a ball

This block is a wonderful adaptation of Bertha Corbett's drawings.  The hands are so detailed, they will require embroidery stitching.  This block is unfinished. Click here for a pattern
